Her Innocence Rises with the Sun

Some paintings are created with brushes. Others are created with lived experience, empathy, and hope.
"Her Innocence Rises with the Sun" is one of those paintings.
Created by Debra Vassar, co-owner and resident artist of Sol Kalitri, this deeply personal work was featured in the Reclaiming Voices Survivor Art Show, an annual exhibition hosted by Reclaim13 that empowers survivors of sexual abuse and exploitation through creative expression.
Debra completed this entire painting in a single night while listening on repeat to "Feel" by Jacob Collier featuring Lianne La Havas. The song became more than background music—it became part of the painting itself. Every brushstroke followed the rhythm of vulnerability, healing, and quiet resilience woven into the music, allowing emotion to guide the artwork from beginning to end.
For Debra, participating in the Reclaiming Voices exhibition was never simply about displaying artwork. Reclaim13 holds a deeply personal place in her heart. Their mission of restoring dignity, offering hope, and creating safe spaces for survivors aligns with values she carries into both her art and her life. Supporting an organization that walks alongside survivors gave this painting a purpose beyond the canvas.
The title, "Her Innocence Rises with the Sun," reflects the duality of the young woman portrayed. At night, the weight of trauma, fear, and memories can change how she sees herself. But with the morning light comes something different. The sunrise represents renewal, healing, and the quiet return of the innocence that was never truly lost. Though her appearance may seem different between night and day, what changes most is not her identity—it is the light through which she is able to see herself.
Her oversized red glasses symbolize vision and perspective. They remind us that healing often begins when we dare to look at ourselves through compassion instead of pain. Her natural hair stands boldly and unapologetically, representing strength, identity, and beauty that cannot be diminished by the hardships she has endured.
This painting is ultimately a reminder that survivors are not defined by what happened to them. They are defined by their courage to keep rising.

"Her Innocence Rises with the Sun" is more than an original painting—it is a tribute to every survivor whose story deserves to be heard, whose voice deserves to be reclaimed, and whose light continues to rise with each new day.
